Not to be confused with the county of the same name

Worth saying plainly, because it trips people up: Hernando, Florida is a community inside Citrus County. Hernando County is a different county entirely, to the south, and it is not part of our service area. The 2020 Census counted 9,284 residents in the Hernando CDP, up from 9,054 a decade earlier, with a median age of 58.3 and 37.5 percent of residents 65 or older. The community was formerly its own incorporated city and was disincorporated in the 1970s. U.S. 41 runs through it as the main road, with State Road 200 and County Road 486 both ending at US 41 in town, and it borders Citrus Hills to the southwest.

Water, lakes, and a rail-trail

The Tsala Apopka chain of lakes is split by water control structures into three named pools, and one of them is called the Hernando pool, named for this community. It sits north of the Inverness and Floral City pools on the same chain. Hernando also has a long-standing local heritage of airboating on the surrounding wetlands, and fishing and hunting are common recreation here.

The Withlacoochee State Trail, the 46-mile paved rail-trail that runs the length of the old CSX corridor through Citrus, Hernando, and Pasco counties, passes through the Hernando area as well. Like everywhere else along its length, it is built for hiking, biking, and horses, not for motorized traffic, and a golf cart is not permitted on it.

What a Hernando cart deals with

Citrus County’s golf cart ordinance designates exactly three zones countywide, and Hernando is not one of them: the area within the HCA Florida Citrus hospital campus in Inverness, the streets of Crystal River within city limits, and part of Old Homosassa. A public street in Hernando has not been designated for golf cart use under F.S. 316.212, so carts here belong on private property or, where a community has its own internal rules, on roads the association controls.
