Why Citrus County carts break the way they do

Heat is the battery killer, and it runs longer here than the coast suggests. NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 climate normals for the Inverness 3 SE station put the July average high at 90.6°F and August at 90.4°F, with 111.7 days a year at 90°F or above, a hair more than three and a half months. Inside a flooded lead-acid battery, that heat evaporates water out of the electrolyte faster, and once the level drops below the top of the plates, the exposed lead sulfates and permanently loses capacity. A pack rated for five or six years of golf-course duty up north often taps out at three or four here. Watering on a schedule from spring through fall is the cheapest thing you can do for a $1,200 pack.

The wet season does not let anything dry out. The same station puts annual precipitation at 52.39 inches, with 30.43 inches of it, about 58 percent, falling June through September. A garage stays damp for a third of the year, terminals and cable lugs oxidize, corroded connections add resistance, and resistance mimics a dying battery pack. Part of every diagnostic is a voltage-drop check along the main cables, because plenty of owners are shopping for a $1,200 pack when the fix is a $100 cable service.

Salt is a Gulf-side problem, not an Inverness one. Inverness sits inland on the western shore of the Tsala Apopka and Lake Henderson chain, freshwater lakes with no salt exposure. The corrosion problem shifts to Crystal River and Homosassa, where the county’s springs feed tidal rivers that reach the Gulf: a cluster of 50 first-magnitude springs feeds Kings Bay, holding a constant 72°F that draws hundreds of manatees every winter. Carts that live near those tidal rivers get terminals coated and hardware checked more often. A cart in Citrus Hills or Beverly Hills gets the heat-and-humidity treatment instead.

Hurricane Helene put the largest storm surge ever recorded in Citrus County history into Crystal River on September 27, 2024, and Citrus County deputies rescued more than 100 people that day. Golf cart, LSV, or neither: the 20 mph line

Florida Statute 320.01 defines a golf cart as a vehicle built for a golf course that is “not capable of exceeding speeds of 20 miles per hour,” and a low-speed vehicle as a four-wheeled vehicle whose top speed is “greater than 20 miles per hour but not greater than 25 miles per hour.” That number decides your rulebook, and in Inverness it does not decide much: under Citrus County’s golf cart ordinance, the only place in the entire city where a golf cart may legally use a public street is the area within the HCA Florida Citrus hospital campus. Nowhere else in Inverness has been designated. Crystal River has designated its own city streets, and part of Old Homosassa has a county-designated zone.
