Homosassa is a small, quiet community in southwestern Citrus County, west of U.S. 19 and 98, with 2,299 residents at the 2020 Census, a median age of 63.5, and 46.2 percent of residents 65 or older, one of the older profiles anywhere in the county. It is a genuinely low-key place; David Levy Yulee established a sugar plantation on the Homosassa River here in 1851; the steam-powered mill operated until 1864, and the site was abandoned after the Civil War ended in 1865. The Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins are now preserved as a state historic site. Nearby, in the separate community of Homosassa Springs, the Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park draws visitors for manatee viewing along with black bears, bobcats, deer, alligators, and river otters.

The old riverside district, known locally as Old Homosassa, sits on both sides of the Homosassa River, centered on Yulee Drive, sometimes called “the crooked road,” and Fishbowl Drive, a few miles west of US 19.

A real designated cart zone

Citrus County’s golf cart ordinance designates one specific zone in Homosassa: the area west of West Yulee Drive from West Fishbowl Drive, sitting right inside that historic Old Homosassa riverside district. That makes Homosassa one of only three places in the entire county, alongside part of Inverness and the streets of Crystal River, where a golf cart is legally permitted on a public street under F.S. 316.212. Within that zone, the required equipment is the same statewide list: efficient brakes, reliable steering, safe tires, a rearview mirror, and red reflectorized warning devices front and rear, daytime operation unless the local government has approved night driving with the fuller light kit. Salt is the whole story

Homosassa sits directly on a spring-fed river that runs to the Gulf, which puts it in the same corrosion category as Crystal River rather than inland communities like Inverness or Citrus Hills. Salt air makes moisture conductive at every place two metals meet on a cart: battery posts, cable lugs, charge-port pins, solenoid terminals, and brake hardware. Corroded connections add resistance, resistance makes a healthy pack look weak under load and makes a charger run long or refuse to start, and plenty of Homosassa owners end up pricing a $1,200 battery pack when the actual fix is a cable-and-terminal service well under $150. Citrus County’s Gulf-facing communities have taken real storm damage from recent hurricanes. Homes in Crystal River and Homosassa Springs saw storm surge inundation with several feet of water inside during Hurricane Helene on September 27, 2024, and Citrus County deputies rescued more than 100 people that day countywide.
