Golf cart tire flat or dry rotted: what to check and what it costs

A cracked, dry-rotted, or suddenly flat golf cart tire is one of the simpler calls we take, and it is also one of the most weather-driven. Citrus County’s sun and heat break down rubber faster than most owners expect, and a set of four tires runs $300 to $600 installed, with single-tire replacement at $75 to $150 each.

Check this first (five minutes)

1. Look at the sidewalls, not just the tread. Dry rot shows as fine cracking on the sidewall well before the tread looks worn. A tire can have plenty of tread left and still be unsafe.
2. Check tire pressure on all four. Low pressure looks like a flat from a distance and is free to fix.
3. Look for the actual puncture. A nail, a thorn, or a sharp piece of debris is often visible if you look closely at the tread.
4. Feel for cupping. Run a hand across the tread. An uneven, wavy wear pattern points to alignment or a worn kingpin, not the tire itself.
5. Note how the cart is stored. A tire that sits in direct sun for years dry-rots faster than one kept under a carport or in a garage.

Why Citrus County tires dry-rot on a faster clock

NOAA’s Inverness 3 SE station counts 111.7 days a year at 90°F or above, more than three and a half months, and UV exposure combined with that much heat breaks down tire rubber well before the tread wears out on a cart that covers modest daily mileage. A cart parked in an open carport in Citrus Hills or on a driveway in Beverly Hills sees more direct sun exposure than one kept fully garaged, and it shows up as sidewall cracking years before the tread would call for a change on mileage alone.

Communities built around year-round golf, like Sugarmill Woods with its two courses, put real mileage on tires too, so a cart there can wear the tread down at the same time the sidewalls start to crack from sun exposure, which usually means replacing the full set rather than chasing individual tires as they fail.

Turf, street, or all-terrain

Turf tires are what most community associations and golf courses want: soft, wide, low pressure, built not to tear up a green. Street tires wear longer on pavement and hold pressure better for a cart that stays on neighborhood roads. All-terrain tires for lifted carts cost more and wear faster on asphalt than their tread pattern suggests. If the cart goes on a course at all, turf is the safer default; if it never leaves paved streets, street tread lasts longer. We carry both on the truck.

What a tire visit includes

Tires mounted and balanced in your driveway, lug nuts torqued to spec, and a check of the other three while we are there, since a set that has aged together often needs replacing together even if only one has failed outright. Tire pressure gets checked and set as part of every tune-up, and under-inflation is the cheapest range thief on the whole cart, worth checking even when the tires themselves are fine.
