The Citrus County Golf Cart Maintenance Calendar

Most of the maintenance advice printed for golf carts is written for a golf-course season somewhere with real winters. Citrus County does not have one of those. NOAA’s Inverness 3 SE station counts 111.7 days a year at 90°F or above and puts the January average low at 42.6°F, mild enough that carts inside communities like Citrus Hills and Sugarmill Woods run errands every month of the year. That means the maintenance calendar here runs on the actual climate, not a generic schedule. Here is what to do and when, month by month.

It also means the calendar has to account for two different climates inside one county. Inverness, Citrus Hills, Beverly Hills, Lecanto, and the rest of the interior deal with heat and humidity as the main threats to a pack and its connections. Crystal River and Homosassa, sitting on tidal, spring-fed rivers that reach the Gulf, add salt corrosion on top of that same heat and humidity, which is why a coastal cart on this calendar needs its terminals checked more often than an inland one on the identical schedule.

Spring: March through May

This is the window to get ahead of summer, and it is the cheapest maintenance you will do all year. Top off water on flooded batteries before the real heat arrives, clean and coat terminals, and check tire pressure and brake pedal travel while the weather is mild enough to notice small problems before they become expensive ones. If the cart has not had a full tune-up in the last twelve months, spring is the time.

Summer: June through September

This is watering season, and it is not optional. The Inverness 3 SE station’s normals put 30.43 inches of rain, about 58 percent of the year’s 52.39, into these four months, and the combination of heat and humidity is the single hardest stretch on a flooded lead-acid pack all year. Water every two to four weeks through this period, using distilled water and filling only after a full charge. This is also the stretch when a garage stays damp for weeks at a time, so terminals and cable lugs corrode fastest now; a mid-summer check of the main cables catches a cheap fix before it becomes a misdiagnosed “dead pack” call.

Fall: October through November

If the cart sat for any stretch of the summer, whether from travel or simply less use, this is when the neglect shows up: shrinking range, a charger that runs longer than it used to, or a cart that will not start at all. Fall is also a good time for a brake and tire check, since the wet season’s humidity can seize cams and cables that then show up as a squeal or a drag once the weather turns.

Winter: December through February

Citrus County’s mild winters mean the cart keeps working, which is exactly why winter maintenance still matters. There is no true off-season here, so a cart doing daily loops through a community like Citrus Hills accumulates cycles in January at close to the same rate as July. Use the relatively cooler, drier stretch of the year to catch up on anything the summer schedule missed: a thorough terminal inspection, a full brake and tire check, and confirming the charger is finishing its cycle properly rather than running long.

Winter is also when seasonal residents return, and a cart that sat through the fall while its owners were away needs the same recovery check described for a summer sit: a proper charge attempt followed by a load test, not an assumption either way. What does not change: the rules

Whatever the season, Florida’s F.S. 316.212 and Citrus County’s own Code of Ordinances Sec. 98-72 govern where a cart may legally use a public street, and that does not shift with the calendar. The county’s three designated zones, the HCA Florida Citrus hospital campus in Inverness, the streets of Crystal River, and part of Old Homosassa, are the same in January as in July. One thing that is worth knowing regardless of season: the Withlacoochee State Trail, the 46-mile paved path running through Cooter Pond Park, Wallace Brooks Park, and Liberty Park in Inverness, is a hiking, biking, and horse trail year-round and does not permit golf carts at any time of year, no matter how quiet it looks on a winter morning. What a driveway check catches, and what it does not

Owners can do a real share of this calendar themselves: checking water levels, setting tire pressure, looking at terminals for green corrosion, and confirming the charger clicks off on schedule. What a driveway check cannot do is load test a battery, which is the only way to tell a pack with real capacity left from one that reads fine at rest and collapses the moment the motor asks for current. It also cannot measure voltage drop along the main cables under load, which is how a corroded connection gets mistaken for a dying pack, or read specific gravity cell by cell on a flooded battery. Those three tests are what a proper tune-up adds on top of what an owner can check from the driveway, and they are the difference between guessing at a $1,200 pack and knowing for certain.
